"South Side" (KjLyn)

The only bad thing I can say about Kj is that she hasn’t given me a million dollars yet.

However, considering that she doesn’t have a million dollars to spare, I guess I’ll forgive her.

I first met Kj in the summer of 2007.  I was doing a shoot for a marine dealership and she was looking for someone to take photos of her in her new bikini.   It was a fair trade.  Since then, I have worked with Kj on several occasions and in several settings.  In every case, I have come away with more than I had expected–and I’m learning to expect a lot from her.  I have never been disappointed, and I am always pleasantly surprised.  She’s one of those models people who isn’t afraid to jump in and do what needs to be done.

I think one of the greatest compliments I can give her is that it’s not uncommon for me to look at her work and not recognize her.  She adapts so amazingly well to the requirements of a shoot that she becomes a different person in the images.

There’s more to her than just a pretty face, however.  Kj is (exhaustingly) active behind the scenes, as well.  She’s a modeling and runway coach, a “gatekeeper” on Model Mayhem, an organizer for Madison Mayhem Meet-ups, a model co-ordinator and liaison for Wisconsin Fashion Week (and Fashion Fridays), and a fashion show producer.   And just to make it even more impressive… this is all in addition to working a real job and having a social life.

Kj is perhaps the most flexible, professional, active, involved, giving, fun, conscientious, adventurous, dedicated, talented, and surprising models I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with.

And…  I’m very honored to be able to call her a friend.

If you ever have the chance to work with or learn from Kj, take it!

Fitness

Model = KjLyn

Model = KjLyn

My single-source and sharp-angle lighting techniques are drawn from ballet and modern dance where the purpose of the lighting is to show off the body, not light up the face. My fitness photography is very distinctive and not at all like the “swimsuit model” images that are so common. Single-source lighting is both flattering and unforgiving: It highlights every contour of muscle on your body, accentuating muscle tone and the contour of the body.

My approach to fitness photography is very different from the norm. Where traditional photographers seek to portray fitness models as “sexy”, I choose to present them as “powerful”.  A woman who can bench press twice her weight, run a marathon, or go 15 rounds in the ring shouldn’t need to put on a bikini and a cheesy smile to be seen as beautiful.

Fitness photography should be able to portray the models as powerful, confident, and beautiful–without having to rely on swimsuit-model cliches.

What are YOUR needs?

I’m also available for other more strange, personal, whimsical, or creative styles of photography.

If you don’t see what you want on one of the other style pages, feel free to contact me and ask. Other styles include:

  • Live performances: Live theatre, concerts, public speaking events, etc. For these jobs I will need full access to the performance area and back-stage. For theatre, I suggest a full-dress rehearsal rather than an actual performace. For concerts, I will need access to the off-stage areas and (preferably) on-stage. I spent almost 20 years as a stagehand, so I know how to stay unobtrusive and out of the way.
  • Public events: Charity events, festivals, promotional events; anywhere you’re looking to get shots of your big event for your newsletter, website, or other advertisements.
  • Documentary: Do you need to document a task or process? Well-done photos can make a how-to document infinitely easier to understand. Photos of your work-flow–and the final product–can help to show customers (or future employers) that you know what you’re doing. Or, just record your work for review, sharing, or posterity.
  • Inventory: Do you need to document your inventory? Need photos for an e-bay auction? Want proof of what’s in your house for your home-owners insurance? Need documentation of damage for an insurance claim? Want evidence for a civil trial or other court case?
  • Stock Images: Are you looking for random images to use down the line?  I can provide a supply of royalty-free images custom-captured for your needs.  Use them where ever and when ever you want.
  • Something else: do you need something else that’s not on the list? Contact me and let me know. Just a note: I don’t photograph little kids or weddings. Sorry, those are specialty areas I’m just not interested in pursuing.

Artistic

Art isn’t only for the elite, and photographs are more than portraits.

Art is created from emotion, creativity, and vision. Step into the studio and create something that will make people stop and look–something that will make them think and feel.

Throughout the centuries, even the finest artists have used amateurs as inspiration for their greatest works. You needn’t be a professional model to create artistic works. Quite the contrary: the most artistic and powerful images I have created have been working with women who are modeling for fun. Some have been active amateurs, others have simply been intrigued by a specific project on which I’ve been working.

Commercial

Commercial photography is a different kind of beast–one with a lot of variations. While it’s a small part of my business, I am available for commercial shoots showing your products in action or your facilities.

If you’re looking to advertise on your website, in magazines, direct mail, brochures, or any other visual media, it’s likely you’re going to want photos of your products, your facilities, or events where your services are being used. I can help you with that.

Commercial rates start at $650. This includes:

  • Photographer’s time
  • Image processing
  • A DVD with final images in full-resolution .TIFF format for print, full-resolution .JPG format for print, low-resolution .JPG for digital publishing, and web-optimized .JPG for web site use.
  • All rights to copy, publish, and distribute–including for commercial use. As copyright holder, I do reserve the right to block usage which I find to be morally objectionable (e.g., promoting racism).

Need more than just a photographer?

You’ve got a business to run. You don’t want to be dealing with details for a shoot; you just want it to happen. Through my network of contacts and photography associations, I can provide models, wardrobe crew, make-up artists, and even some specialized locations for your commercial shoot. You can specify what you’re looking for or leave it to me.
